Birds by scientific name

Whilst numerous birds occur within the vicinity of both the main JCU campuses, those which are included on this site are those actually observed on campus or overflying. The number of bird species recorded for the Townsville area is over 350 of which some 250 are recorded for the Townsville Town Common, a well-known refuge area. Species included are chiefly based on observations by Gregor Calvert (Townsville), Heather Winsor and John Seale (Cairns). Names are according to Simpson and Day (1996), Field Guide to the Birds of Australia. Faculty with a research interest in birds are Brad Congdon, Chris Johnson, Richard Pearson and Simon Robson in the School of Marine and Tropical Biology.
