Plants by scientific name

The original vegetation of the Douglas campus was an open eucalypt woodland dominated by Poplar or Cabbage gum (Eucalyptus platyphylla). Relatively undisturbed natural vegetation remains around the southern and eastern portions of the campus particularly along the creek on the eastern side. The creek through the centre of the campus which, provides a visual break, has been augmented by additional plantings, facilitated by the use of overhead sprinklers using recycled water.
The original vegetation of the Smithfield campus was lowland rainforest with a mixture of sclerophyll and woodland on the adjacent ridges. Prior to the establishment of the campus most of the area had been planted to sugarcane, thus the only original vegetation remaining is on the surrounding hillsides and along Half Moon Creek and its branches.
Because of the large number of species, those with descriptions are from the regularly mown or 'tended' areas.
Faculty involved in Plant ecology and systematics are Bob Congdon, Will Edwards, Paul Gadek and Michelle Waycott. Kirsten Heimann - algae.
