This widespread plant was once placed in the genus Cassia. A small perennial shrub to about 60 cm high but sometimes much taller, has leaves with 20-60 pairs of leaflets, each 3-7 mm long and up to 1 mm wide. Flowers singly or in groups of 2-3. Petals yellow, stamens 10; pod to 5 cm long, 4 mm wide, flat; seeds 12-24 orange brown in colour.
