Applying for a Position at James Cook University

1. An Overview of the Recruitment Process

The recruitment process is based on the Position Document which describes the position responsibilities and Key and Desirable Selection Criteria ie. the qualifications, skills, knowledge, abilities and personal qualities required to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position.

Advertisements for positions at James Cook University most commonly appear in the Townsville Bulletin, Cairns Post, Brisbane Courier Mail and The Australian. Academic positions may be advertised both nationally and internationally. Advertisements are also placed on the Jobs@JCU website.

Candidates are evaluated against the Key AND Desirable Selection Criteria. At least three people including the immediate supervisor of the position are involved in this process. A selection committee will interview those candidates who are assessed as best meeting the requirements of the Selection Criteria (normally not more 4 candidates) and recommend one or more appointable candidates in order of merit for approval by the appropriate senior officer of the University. Both the appointee and all unsuccessful applicants will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible after the recommendation has been approved.
