NetAccess Guide

What is NetAccess?

NetAccess is the system JCU uses to account for staff and students internet usage. You can manually authenticate to NetAccess using the link above, or when attempting to access an external internet site, you should be redirected to the NetAccess Authentication page, where you will be prompted for your JCU username and password. After entering your details, a pop-up will appear with your current remaining NetAccess balance and you will be taken to the internet site you requested. Any programs on your computer will be able to access the internet as long as the NetAccess pop-up remains open, so in order to use other programs such as skype or an instant messaging program, you will need to authenticate to NetAccess first. When you are finished using the internet, close the NetAccess pop up and your computer will no longer have access to external sites.

If you are using a browser that blocks pop-ups, you may have to allow the address ‘jet.jcu.edu.au’ before the NetAccess pop-up can be displayed. If the NetAccess pop-up is blocked, your internet session will time out after 10 minutes. Instructions on how to allow pop-ups at JCU for supported web browsers can be found here.

The NetAccess pop-up window MUST stay open for your internet session to remain active. If you close the pop-up then the session will timeout after 10 minutes.

What internet traffic is charged?

Charges only apply to the amount (volume) of incoming data (e.g. Web pages, files etc.) users receive from Internet sites outside JCU (domestic and international).

There is no charge for traffic to or from any campus servers (Webmail, LearnJCU, StudentsOnline, etc). This means transfers between the University network and the college network are also free. In fact, if you have exceeded your quota, you can still get anything from any campus server, as per normal.

Also, there is no charge for outgoing traffic.

All traffic during off-peak times (8pm to 8am) is also free.

At present, JCU email is not charged to the user but is counted in the campus overhead figure.

Exception reports are generated for high incoming and outgoing traffic and these reports investigated.

Internet traffic charge rates

Web internet usage (through the proxy) is free if sourced from any of the following:

  • Your computer's hard disk drive - e.g. Web browser local cache;

  • Any computer within JCU (Townsville, Cairns, Vincent etc.) including all local Web content;

  • The JCU Web Proxy Server;

  • Any 'sibling' Web Proxy Server at one of Queensland Universities with whom we peer;

  • Any other site on the QLD RNO. This includes most QLD universities and research institutions.

  • Data from the AARNet mirror (http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/) which is a source of free software.

  • Any sites within AARNet,

  • Any sites peered at the Queensland PIPE Internet exchange.

  • Any international sites connected to Internet2, CANet or the ARN.

Usage charge rates for all other incoming traffic, such as external webpages and FTP servers, are:

  • $2.50/GB for sites within Australia, and

  • $2.50/GB for international sites.

How do I pay for NetAccess?

If you wish to add extra funds to your NetAccess account, you can do so via the following means:

  • Online by credit card through StudentsOnline. Log into Students Online, click on Credit Card Payments for CopyPrint/NetAccess under the Student Information side bar. The minimum transaction is $20.00.

  • Cash/EFTPOS payments can be made at Lending Services in the Library (Townsville & Cairns) or at the Cashiers Office located in Humanities II building Townsville and A1 Building in Cairns. Be sure to let the cashier know that you want to place the funds on your NetAccess account and not CopyPrint. The minimum payment is $5.00.

Unused paid balance will automatically rollover from month-to-month; however no refunds will be given for unused funds, even at the end of your study.

Staff wishing to add additional credit to their NetAccess accounts will need to contact their respective Resource Accounting Officer and make a request through them. Resource Accounting Officers who are responsible for managing NetAccess quota for staff see Documentation for Resource Accounting Officers for instructions on how to do that.
