Townsville Library

Access

The Eddie Koiko Mabo Library in Townsville is wheelchair accessible via a ramp to the right of the steps at the front entrance. Access to the first and second floors is via the lift situated at the rear of the ground floor.

Accessible parking is located near the side entrance via the car park at the rear of the library. Additional parking bays designated as disability are also available in the library car park.

Students with special needs may apply for a disability parking permit at Queensland Transport.

A Taxi rank is located adjacent to the Student Mall.

Library Facilities

General

  • Wheelchair accessible toilets are located adjacent to the rear stairs on the ground floor

  • Study carrels and large tables are wheelchair accessible on all floors

  • An Oxford large print dictionary is shelved in the Reference Collection at R423 OXF T6

  • Wheelchair accessible internal telephones are located:

    • ground floor opposite the Lending Services Desk

    • near the CD-ROM workstations on the first floor

    • outside the University Librarian's office on the second floor

  • Public telephones are located outside the entrance of the Library. If telephones are out of order, please contact Lending Services

  • Guide dogs are permitted in the Library

Information and Research Assistance

InfoHelp is available on the 1st floor of the Library to assist with:

  • Locating information through the catalogue

  • Collecting materials from shelves

  • Use of referencing tools

Cairns Library

Access

The Library in Cairns is wheelchair accessible. Access to the first and second floors is via the lift situated to the right of the entrance.

Six parking bays closest to the Library building are designated as disability parking. In addition, adjacent to the building is a designated drop off and pick up point with shelter from the elements.

A taxi rank is located outside of Building A1 (The Rock).

Students with special needs may apply for a disability parking permit at Queensland Transport.

Library Facilities

General

  • Wheelchair accessible toilets are located in foyer of the main entrance on the left hand side. There are also disabled male and female toilets located on the second floor

  • Study carrels and large tables are wheelchair accessible

  • The Library provides a number of wheelchair accessible computer workstations

  • Wheelchair accessible internal telephones are located in the main foyer and on every floor within the Library

  • A wheel chair accessible public telephone is located in the foyer of the main entrance to the building. If the telephone is out of order, contact the Student Association or the Library Services Desk

  • Guide dogs are permitted in the Library

Information and Research Assistance

Loans at all JCU Libraries

Student and Staff loan conditions are available at http://cms.jcu.edu.au/libcomp/library/borrowing/index.htm. Persons borrowing on behalf of staff and students with disabilities who are unable to do so themselves are eligible to become Special Borrowers. In certain circumstances extended loans are available.

Loans from other libraries

Books in audio or Braille formats can be borrowed from other libraries through Document Supply.

Photocopying/Printing

A large screen monitor with touchscreen capabilities is provided for clients to print and photocopy. difficulty using the swipe card terminals attached to printers to release their print jobs. The touchscreen is located next to the printer in the Reading room on the ground floor.

To use:

  • Select student touchscreen as your printer queue option

  • At the touchscreen:

    • login

    • Touch or click the refresh button

    • Select your print job

    • Swipe your card to release the document

Please contact the Library Services Desk (Cairns) or CopyPrint Services (Townsville) for any additional assistance in using the photocopiers or printers.

Computers

Both the Townsville and Cairns libraries provide a number of wheelchair accessible computer workstations.

Options to increase font size on public computers:

  • Mozilla Firefox

    • CTRL, SCROLL (increases and decreases font size)

    • CTRL + (to increase font size)

    • CTRL - (to decrease font size)

    • CTRL 0 (to set back to normal font size)

    • View > Zoom

  • Internet Explorer

    • CTRL, SCROLL (increases and decreases font size)

    • View > Text Size

Options to maximize accessibility on public computers

Start > Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > Accessibility Wizard

The Microsoft Windows Accessibility Wizard allows you to change the following:

  • Font size – can change text size and changes font size for window title bars, menus and other features (does NOT increase size of text inside windows)

  • Switch to a lower resolution – increases the size of items on the screen including text inside windows

  • Use Microsoft magnifier – opens a floating window which displays an enlarged view of part of the active screen

  • Allows you to select a scroll bar and window border size, desktop icon size, high contrast display colours, size and colour of mouse cursor, blink rate and width of cursor

AccessAbility Services

AccessAbility Services provides support for students studying with a temporary or permanent disability, injury or health condition. A range of assistive technology and equipment is available, including a designated computer room, for use by students registered with AccessAbility Services.
